The big idea behind the Jade Ribbon Arizona Campaign is to test and vaccinate everyone at risk for hepatitis B virus. Since, one in ten Asians and Pacific Islanders are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (and likely do not know their status) they are a priority for the campaign. There are, however, over 100,000 Asians and Pacific Islanders living in Maricopa County. In order to effectively reach, educate, test, and vaccinate them we will need to get organized, get smarter, and get (lots and lots of) help. We begin convening the Jade Ribbon Arizona Collaborative. Want to help?
The Jade Ribbon Arizona Collaborative (JRAC) will:
Assist in the planning of the educational and outreach campaign, the mass-testing and vaccination events, worksite testing and vaccination events. (Getting Organized. Getting Smarter. Getting Help.)
Identify areas and issues for reflection and clarification. (Getting Smarter - for example; identifying best practices for testing and vaccination campaigns, directing a literature review and developing an annotated bibliography, outreach to hard to reach populations, reimbursement issues, safety net providers, and so forth).
Identify and recruit additional JRAC members and allies. (Getting Organized. Getting Help)
Identify other work areas and community needs.
We need to learn from and partner with very smart and very busy people. That is the reason we set up the following tools to facilitate the work of the collaborative.
Conference Bridge - Meetings will conducted via conference calls. The conference calls will be recorded and made available through a podcast. To reduce costs to the campaign we will be using a non-toll free system. The call-in number will be (218) 486-1300 and the bridge number is 713825. Regular long distance charges (to area code 218 - Duluth, MN) will apply. This service, which will be provided at no charge to the campaign, can handle up to 250 participants and will allow the recording of conference calls, but does not have a toll-free number for participants.
Forum - We have set up a web-based discussion forum for the campaign. You may find the page at http://forum.jaderibbon.net. This will replace the usual email discussion list and will be the preferred site to post questions for the collaborative (and allies) to answer. The forum will be a moderated public forum, and be open for anyone to view and to contribute.
Wiki - We have set-up a wiki. Wikis are great tools for collaborative writing. The wiki may be found at http://wiki.jaderibbon.net and will be the site for any research, the annotated bibliography, notices and agendas. We are using MediaWiki software (the same software that drives Wikipedia). It is not too hard to learn and use and I encourage your participation in the collaborative writing exercise (besides being able to “wiki” is a good literacy to have).
Blog/podcast - You may keep up with the latest campaign news on our blog. You may find the blog at http://blog.jaderibbon.net. The blog will also contain links to our podcast and video podcast feeds. You may find links for the blog, podcast, posts, and comments RSS feeds on the site. Comments to the blog are open.
Project Management - We have also setup a web-based project management website. As projects and todo lists are developed, we will post them to that site. You may find the project management website at http://project.jaderibbon.net. Anyone may enter the site by using the login “Guest” and password “Guest”. If you would like to contribute to the site please contact me and I will create an account for you.
The campaign also has Twitter, AIM, and Skype accounts - JadeRibbonAZ.
If you would like to suggest others please contact me.
Conference calls and meetings.
I would like to schedule three conference calls and convene one meeting/conference call for the collaborative. The conference calls will be conducted the next three Wednesdays, 7, 14, 21 November 2007 from 11:00 a.m. to Noon. The meeting/conference call will be held on Wednesday, 28 November 2007 from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the APCA offices at 6741 N. 7th Street in Phoenix. The conference calls will be recorded and made available as a podcast. The meeting/conference call will also be livecast on the Jade Ribbon Arizona website.
The proposed agendas are:
Wednesday, 7 November 2007 11:00 a.m. to Noon (Conference Call) - Overview of the Jade Ribbon Arizona Campaign (history, structure, and evaluation), brief introduction to hepatitis B virology and epidemiology, and, hopefully, someone from the Asian Liver Center at Stanford University where Jade Ribbon was founded.
Wednesday, 14 November 2007 11:00 a.m. to Noon (Conference Call) - A presentation on the continuum of care for a hepatitis b patient (need to identify a resource for this), a brainstorm session on research/issue areas and resources - in other words what do we need to get smarter about in order for us to be successful in this testing and vaccination campaign and who can assist us.
Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:00 a.m. to Noon (Conference Call) - Outreach and education strategies, Asian media in Maricopa county, hepatitis B support groups, and a presentation on safety net providers.
Wednesday, 28 November 2007 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Meeting/Webacst/Conference Call - APCA Conference Room - Lunch planned) - Report back from conference calls, discuss and prioritize JRAC research (knowledge) efforts, discuss and prioritize outreach and marketing efforts, strategize and initial planning for valley-wide testing and vaccination efforts.
Conference call-in number is (218) 486-1300 and the bridge number is 713825. Enter the bridge number when prompted to join in on the conference call. Remember regular long distance charges will apply.
The Wednesday, 28 November 2007 meeting will be held at Asian Pacific Community in Action’s large conference room at 6741 N. 7th Street in Phoenix.
